NFC vs QR Code Business Cards: Which to Use?
NFC and QR codes solve the same problem two different ways. What each one actually needs from a phone, and why the best cards carry both.

Both an NFC tag and a QR code do the same job: get someone from a physical card to your digital profile in a few seconds. The question isn’t really which technology is “better” — it’s which one works in the specific moment a given person is standing in front of you, and that turns out to depend on details neither format advertises.
What each one actually requires
An NFC tag needs proximity. Hold a phone near the card — through most non-metal surfaces, including a wallet or a thin table — and the phone reads the link and opens it, without unlocking the screen first on most recent phones. There’s nothing to point, focus, or aim.
A QR code needs a camera and a line of sight. The phone has to be unlocked, the camera app or a scanner opened (on modern iPhones and most Androids, the native camera reads QR codes without a separate app), and the code has to be visible and printed large enough at whatever distance it’s being scanned from. It takes a beat longer than a tap, but it works on essentially every phone made in the last decade — including ones without NFC.
That second point is the real dividing line. NFC has been standard on flagship phones for years, but plenty of budget Android phones, older devices, and some phones with NFC turned off by default won’t read a tag. A QR code has no such gap: any phone with a working camera can scan one.
Where NFC wins
For a card someone is handing you in person, NFC is faster and feels more deliberate — there’s no “let me get my camera out” moment, just a tap. It also works through packaging and behind glass in ways a QR code can’t, since a code needs to actually be seen and NFC just needs to be near. A card on a restaurant counter, an acrylic review stand, or a lanyard all lean on this: the surface doesn’t have to be angled at anyone, it just has to be within a few centimeters of a phone.
NFC also degrades more gracefully with wear. A scuffed or partly worn NFC card still reads fine, because nothing about the chip depends on how the surface looks. A damaged or dirty QR code can stop scanning entirely if enough of the pattern is obscured.
Where QR wins
A QR code works everywhere a picture can go: printed on a menu, a flyer, an email signature, a social media bio, a shop window, the side of a van. It costs nothing to reproduce — no chip to embed, no card to buy — and it scales up or down to whatever size the surface calls for. It also reaches every phone, not just NFC-capable ones, which matters if part of the audience is on older or lower-end devices.
QR codes are also easier to verify at a glance for anyone worried about phishing-style tricks: a printed code can be checked against the URL it decodes to before tapping through, whereas an NFC tap opens straight away.

Why the real answer is both
Neither format is a strict upgrade on the other — they cover different situations, and a card that only supports one of them is guessing which situation it’ll be used in. That’s why a well-built NFC card is programmed with a link and also printed with the matching QR code: the same profile page, reached two different ways, so the format never becomes the reason a tap or scan failed. A downloadable QR code as an SVG means it can be resized for a poster, a table tent, or a business card insert without losing quality, which matters if the code is going to end up printed at more than one size.
The venue version of this question
The same trade-off shows up for businesses collecting reviews, just with different stakes. A card on a restaurant table that only works by NFC misses every guest whose phone doesn’t read tags, or who simply doesn’t think to try tapping something on a table.
