How Do NFC Business Cards Work?

What is actually inside an NFC business card, what happens the moment someone taps it, and why nothing needs to be installed on either side.

An NFC business card looks like an ordinary card, but there’s a tiny chip and antenna laminated inside it — the same NFC technology as a contactless payment card, just carrying a link instead of a bank account. No battery, no circuitry you can see, no charging. It sits there doing nothing until a phone gets close enough to power it wirelessly and read what’s stored on it.

What’s actually on the chip

The chip is not storing your name, your job title, or your phone number directly. It’s storing one small thing: a URL. Tap the card, and the phone reads that URL and opens it, the same way tapping a link in a text message does. Everything a visitor actually sees — your name, your links, your contact button, your photo — lives on the web page the URL points to, not on the chip itself. That distinction matters because it means the card’s job is small and fixed (hold a link, hand it over), while the page behind it can change as often as you like.

Most NFC business cards use one of a handful of common chip types — NTAG213, NTAG215, or NTAG216 are the ones you’ll see most often, differing mainly in how much data they can hold. Any card built on an NDEF-compatible chip like these will work the same way from a visitor’s side: tap, and a link opens.

What happens when someone taps

A tap takes maybe a second. The visitor holds their phone near the card — no unlocking required on most modern phones — and a notification or browser tab opens straight to a profile page. From there they see your links, your contact details, maybe a save-contact button that drops a real vCard, with your photo and phone number, straight into their phone’s contacts app in one tap. No typing your number in by hand, no photographing a stack of cards they’ll lose in a coat pocket.

That profile page is a normal website. It’s not an app, and it doesn’t ask the visitor to become a user of anything. It renders instantly in whatever browser they already have open, on a phone, a laptop, anything with NFC or a camera.

No app, on either side

This is the part people usually assume wrong: neither side of an NFC tap needs an app. The visitor’s phone reads NFC tags natively — iPhones have done this since iOS 11, Android phones for even longer — so tapping a card just opens a web page, the way tapping a link anywhere else does. And the page it opens is, again, just a page. Bentap’s profile pages and the dashboard you use to edit them both run in any browser, including the one already open on your phone. There is nothing to download and nothing to install.

Re-pointing a card, and killing a lost one

Because the chip only stores a link, and the link points at a page you control, the card itself is not the valuable part — the account behind it is. That has two practical consequences. First, you can re-point a card whenever you like: the same physical card that opened your profile last month can be reprogrammed to open a different page tomorrow, without buying a new one. Second, if a card goes missing, you can deactivate its link instantly, so whoever finds it taps a dead end instead of your live profile. Nobody has to physically destroy the card for it to stop working.

Who actually uses one

The mechanics are the same for everyone, but what people put behind the tap varies a lot. A freelancer might point their card at a personal profile with a portfolio link and a save-contact button, so a client walks away with their number already saved instead of a business card that gets lost in a bag. A salesperson at a trade show taps prospects through to a page with a calendar link and a product one-pager, and can watch which conversations turned into a click afterward. A restaurant might hand every server a card that opens straight to the Google review screen, so asking a happy table for a review takes a tap instead of an awkward “do you mind searching us up.” None of these are different products — they’re the same tag, pointed at a different kind of page, which is why re-pointing matters more than the chip spec does.

Where NFC fits next to a QR code

NFC and QR codes solve the same problem from two directions. A QR code needs a camera and, on some phones, a scanning app; an NFC tag needs proximity and nothing else. That’s why most NFC cards also carry a printable QR code alongside the chip — for the phones or moments where a tap isn’t practical, the code does the same job through a lens instead of an antenna.

The part that’s easy to miss

The chip itself is close to disposable — a plain NFC sticker from a market stall will read exactly the same way as a printed card, because they’re both just carrying a link. What makes an NFC card worth anything is the profile page it points to and how easily you can keep that page current.
